Home » Castile and León
Situated in the northwest and central part of Spain, it is bordered by Galicia and Asturias to the northwest and Madrid to the southeast. It is the largest region by area, with a rich historical and architectural heritage.
The name Castile and León derives from the historical kingdoms that once existed in the region:
Castile – The name “Castile” comes from the Spanish word “castillo,” meaning “castle.” The region was named for the numerous castles built there during the early Middle Ages, particularly as a defensive measure against Moorish invasions. The Kingdom of Castile was initially established in the 9th century as a frontier region and gradually expanded its territory.
León – The name “León” is derived from the Latin word “legio,” which means “legion.” This name refers to the Roman military presence in the area during the Roman Empire. The Kingdom of León was one of the early Christian kingdoms formed in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula during the Reconquista, a period of Christian reconquest of territories from Muslim rule.
The two regions were united in 1230 under the reign of Ferdinand III, combining their names to form the Kingdom of Castile and León. The name reflects the historical significance and heritage of both kingdoms.
